西林社区因辖内的西林社得名。当地方言称西林为“狮篮”，后读作“西篮”；因地处洪济山西麓，“林”与“篮”同音，遂又写作西林[1]。

历史沿革[edit]

清末这里称西林葛社，属福相保；1945年10月归蔡塘保，解放初期隶属梧村乡，1954年2月改属莲坂乡，1956年属江头乡[2]。

1958年底归莲坂大队，1962年另设西林大队；1984年，这里改设为西林村委会，1987年改归开元区的莲前街道办事处[2]。

1989年12月，龙山桥居委会从西林村析出；1997年6月，西林村又分出西林东里等5个居委会；2003年6月改制为西林社区[2]。

土地已被征用，村庄已经完全城市化[1]。
