建城镇在郁南县境西北一侧，与县城相距约16公里。[2][3]

明万历五年（1577年）因西宁县治设于此而修建城池，地名由此得来。[2][4]

历史沿革[edit]

据博雅地名网，南齐永明八年（490年）此地已设县级治所，名为威城县；南北朝至齐代均为其所在，明代则改作西宁县治。[2] 民国年间建城曾是郁南县城所在。1950年4月，县政府自建城移至都城。[2][4] 1987年取消区、乡的编制，此地改为乡镇体制并设立建城镇；2003年9月，原罗旁镇的辖区划归建城镇。[2][4]

地理环境[edit]

镇境内有西江的黄金河道，常年可通航1000吨级的船只。省道水长线贯穿全镇。[3]

特产与荣誉[edit]

无核黄皮和天马山甜桃曾获广东省「名优稀水果」称号，绿色食品无核黄皮的母树位于建城镇境内。[3]

2004年5月，建城镇获得「广东省无核黄皮专业镇」称号。[1]

农业农村部于2019年9月把建城镇列为「第九批全国一村一品示范村镇」（无核黄皮）。[2]

2023年11月，建城镇入选「广东“百千万工程”首批典型县镇村」；2024年4月，建城镇列入「广东省第一批乡村振兴示范镇」创建名单。[2]
