华湖镇在广东省揭阳市惠来县的中部，镇域东、南、西三面依次与周田、神泉、惠城三镇相连，北面以雷岭山为界，与汕头市潮南区相邻。镇名来自堡内村前旧有的一座湖，湖名俗称“下湖”，雅称“华湖”，后以所在村的名字为镇名。全镇面积据百度百科为61.7平方千米，博雅地名网记为约60平方千米。境内的赤山古院和堡内古寨都是广东省文物保护单位。[1][2][3][4][6][12]

历史沿革[edit]

建国初期这一带叫华堡乡，归惠城区管辖。1956年几个大乡合并为一，改名华湖乡，乡政府设在堡内村。1958年华湖乡并入红旗公社，当年末惠来县并入普宁县，红旗公社也随之隶属普宁。1961年惠来恢复县制，红旗公社分出后成立华湖公社。1983年，该公社被改设为区，共管辖十个乡；到1986年11月，区又改为镇。[1]

地理环境[edit]

镇境在县域中部，位于盐岭河与雷岭河的中下游，地势以丘陵和阶地为主，属亚热带季风性气候。葵和公路自东向西穿过镇境中部。[2][3]

镇域面积的记载有两种：百度百科作61.7平方千米，博雅地名网作约60平方千米。[3][2]

据百度百科，2019年华湖镇户籍人口为79169人。第七次全国人口普查的结果，经博雅地名网引录，为6.28万人，该数据于2021年6月公布。1987年的人口则为4.03万人。[3][1][2]

经济[edit]

1987年的数字显示，农业部分为1122.25万元，全镇工农业总产值则为1598.01万元。[2]

2019年，镇内有工业企业30个，其中规模以上企业7个。[3]

农作物以水稻、番薯、花生为主，甘蔗、大葱、薏米也有种植。水果中荔枝种植最多，博雅地名网概况记荔枝约8300亩。[2]

名胜古迹[edit]

赤山古院在东福村境内，元朝至正二年（1342年）开始修建，明嘉靖三十二年（1553年）得到重修。院落、真武庙、宗祠与厝包共同组成整组建筑，朝南而建，总面积2245平方米。解放战争时期，这里曾是东江特委和华南游击队的地下联络点。先后列入县级（2012年7月）和「第八批广东省文物保护单位」（2015年12月10日）。[4][5]

堡内古寨位于堡内村，1645年（清顺治二年）建成，原为抵御倭寇的侵扰而设，平面近圆形，占地13200平方米。寨门有东、北两处，墙上设6座瞭望台。古寨在2013年4月成为县级文物保护单位，两年后的12月10日又进入「第八批广东省文物保护单位」名单。[6][7]

著名人物[edit]

谢正蒙（1563～1631年），字子圣，华谢村人。明万历十六年（1588年）举于乡，明代曾任监察御史。[1][8][9]

谢秀莲（1906～1987年），华谢村人，出身贫苦之家，十五岁时嫁往东陇镇。[1][8]

吴明光（1908～1937年），又名其苏，溪洋村人。民国时期全家迁居神泉镇，后考入中央军校，毕业后留校任教。[10]

翁照恒是抗日名将，其故乡为华陇村。[11]
