上山村处在上砂镇北部的山区，与五华县相邻。村名来源于村民迁居山上的情形，这里是全镇海拔最高的聚居地。[1]

村址海拔约690米，雨雾充沛，适合种茶。村中茶园近2000亩，多为本地绿茶，另有佛首、水仙等品种，据称年产茶叶逾八万斤。[1]

历史沿革[edit]

这里约在1810年间由庄、甘、陈、蔡等姓开基建村。大队建制自1958年延续至1983年；1984年2月生产大队撤销，改设乡政府；1986年成为村民委员会，1990年改称管理区，1999年重新定为村委会，沿用至今。[1]

2009年本村被揭西县评为文明村；2019年9月本村上榜「2018年广东省民主法治示范村（社区）」创建单位名单。[1]

人文[edit]

村里建有一座天主教堂，村民多信奉天主教；上山天主教堂为「县级重点文物保护单位」。[1][2]

庄严（1910至1986年）原名清球，本村人，自幼受天主教影响。[1]
