市头村是龙湖镇政府所在地。它与市尾村同称龙湖村；旧时此地叫塘湖寨，志书又作龙湖市。村内保留较多明清古建筑，龙湖寨的一部分位于本村。[1][3]

历史沿革[edit]

村子北宋时已设乡，因东临韩江，西、南、北三面环塘，故称塘湖。明代嘉靖年间后改名龙湖，后因行政区域划分，分为市头、市尾两个行政村。[1]

1958年公社化时定名「市头大队」，1999年改称市头村民委员会，此名沿用至今。[1]

人文与科举[edit]

据博雅地名网，连同市尾在内，历代科举中有举人16名，进士1名。该进士姚宏中为宋嘉定七年（1214年）一甲第三名，即探花，是潮汕唯一的探花。[1]

明代官吏中有御史许宠宥、户部郎中夏懋学，还有布政使刘子兴。村子呈带状分布，主姓为许、黄、林，村中仍可见明代的寨门旧址与“三街六巷”格局。[1][3]

产业与经济[edit]

村内耕地1134亩。水稻之外，村民还种生柑、蔬菜与香蕉；养猪、养三鸟是常见的家庭副业。工副业以食品制作、制衣、陶瓷和抽纱为主。[2]

1979年，镇政府在村北侧新建集市。2005年，村中工农业收入合计1.22亿元。[2]

荣誉[edit]

2019年9月，市头村列入2018年广东省「民主法治示范村（社区）」创建单位名单。2020年9月、2021年10月和2022年10月，先后入选阿里研究院公布的「淘宝村」名单。[1]

同年11月，本村获评「2021年度全国综合减灾示范社区」；2024年4月，入选「广东省第一批乡村振兴示范村」创建名单。[1]

文化遗产[edit]

龙湖寨位于市头、市尾两村之间，建造时代跨越明至民国；2006年，它被列为潮州市文物保护单位。[3]
