历史沿革[edit]
建国前后，此地先以北面为名，归东莞县第六区管辖；到1954年，它改隶第十一区，即沙田区。[2]
村落与来历[edit]
北面一带是古时珠江水道渔人与商旅避风之处，山前为水沥滩涂，多见篷寮与舟楫。鸦片战争以后，人们沿滩涂围垦出田地，陆地向外扩展，水道被切割成小段，这一带的基围统一被叫作武山沙。[3]
北面多古村址，宋代燕子窝已有民居，今已废。元明后有外村人迁来，其中邓屋族人是怀德邓氏的分支，刘屋刘氏原居南面，黄屋、温屋、苏屋各以姓氏为名。[3]
中华人民共和国成立初，岛上村落合为一个行政乡，称南北面乡；公社化后，北面北部的村落自立为北面管理区。改革开放后，威远大桥建成，交通便利，近年辟建工业区，城区已延伸至村边。[3]
