历史沿革[edit]
宋代时，这里的山岗伸向海滩，山土呈赤黄色，因而得名。元明时期多姓杂居，今山丘坡麓可见碎瓦、墙基和铜钱出土。[2]
六十年代垦荒时，村后曾发现穴道，内有陶片，经市博物馆测定为南北朝时期遗物，山地中还发现了史前陶片。[2]
据族谱，村中何氏先祖原在南雄一带，何弼于明洪武十三年（1380年）被荐为考廉人才。何氏立足赤岗的时间，据族谱推算应在南宋。[2]
驿道与人物[edit]
赤岗地处东宝古驿道的要道，明代至清代设有邮铺。清初，有一支队伍从宝安经此地撤回莞城抗清，村前曾发生激烈战斗。清中叶后驿道渐废。[2]
村民何芳曾随关天培在威远炮台一带作战，战功显赫，后升任琼州总兵。咸丰年间，他捐资在虎门寨建成莲溪书院。[2]
