村名的来历，是旧时此地养牛的人家很多，池塘也多。[1]

这一地名的沿革：1958年为牛生塘大队，1983年改设牛生塘乡，1987年改为牛生塘管理区。1999年，县里批准在此设立牛生塘村委会，此名沿用至今。[1]
