村处金史通往高车的一条龙脉之上，地形如同横卧的龙，因而名为横塘。[1]
1958年是红光大队，1983年成为横塘乡，1987年改为横塘管理区，1999年县政府同意设立横塘村委会，沿用至今。[1]
经济[edit]
横塘村在2022年10月被广东省农业农村厅认定为「一村一品、一镇一业」专业村，主业为油茶。[1]
镇概况提到村中的温氏养鸡，并把养殖列入「十大农业开发基地」。[2]
文化[edit]
2019年10月，横塘村列入广东省卫生村名录。[1]
