村名取自当地一处积水的坑，当地话“潭”与“覃”同音，村委会便以覃坑为名。[1]
1983年为覃坑乡，1987年为村委会，1989年改称管理区，1999年复称村委会，名称沿用至今。[1]

该村主要种植稻谷、番薯、花生；据博雅地名网，上一年全村农村经济总收入959万元。[1]村里的特色收入来自外运蔬菜和速生林。[1]
