沙院镇在广东省茂名市电白区西南部，东面是水东，西面是小良镇，南面隔着吴川市的王村港，北靠电白城区。[1][3]镇域面积48.14平方千米，2020年11月1日常住人口55550人，辖2个社区、10个行政村，镇政府设在木苏村。[1]

历史沿革[edit]

早期的建置：隋初这里属南巴县，隋大业年间（605—618年）南巴县并入连江县，唐武德年间（618—626年）南巴县复置，北宋开宝五年（972年）又省并到茂名县。[1][4]到明成化年间（1465—1487年），辖地分属电白县下博乡五都的大王、沙院两个小乡，和盐司下里的沙院、沙村；清代归典史管辖，有沙院堡、大王村堡。[4]

民国元年（1912年）起设沙院乡。新中国成立后，1949年11月为三区（水东）所辖，1953年3月转属七区（沙院）；1957年二月为木苏、沙院两个中乡，同年底合成沙院大乡。1958年10月先隶前进公社，12月改隶八一公社；次年5月八一公社撤销，设沙院公社。[4]1983年11月公社改为区，1987年5月区改为镇。[1][4]2001年1月沙院镇归新成立的茂港区；2014年4月，茂港区并入电白区，镇随之隶属电白区。[1][4]

地理环境[edit]

博雅地名网称，镇政府旧设在沙院圩，圩因地势低旷、多沙而得名。[3]全镇为丘陵地貌，偏旱少水；325国道经过海尾社区和新洲村，共青河的支流流过金凤、五和、沙院、琼凡、信联五个村（社区）。[3]气候介于热带与亚热带之间，属季风气候。[1]

据百度百科，2019年镇内共有71家工业企业，规模以上的占13家，另有9家营业面积在50平方米以上的综合商店或超市。[1]博雅地名网提到，镇域里有一处陶瓷建材企业的生产基地，属广东新博丽陶瓷建材有限公司，该公司的前身是广东中润集团。[3]
