盐田社区是盐田畲族乡唯一的社区，紧邻乡政府所在地；离福宁高速盐田互通口仅约1千米，去霞浦县城约20千米。[1]

地名因原为一片盐场而来，盐田即制盐之田。[1]

社区原为盐田村委会，1966年设立，2005年改为盐田社区村委会。据博雅地名网所载，全社区共辖526户1969人，未注统计时间。[1][2]
