村子位于上杭县的西大门，G205国道从村中穿过，距县城中心约2公里。村名因地处县城与临城镇的西南部而得。[1]

政府网站把西南村列为镇内三个少数民族村之一。[3]

人口与经济[edit]

全村有586户、2486人，耕地1876亩，村党支部现有党员58名。辖6个自然村，分19个村民小组。以上数字见于博雅地名网，未注明统计年份。[1]

历史沿革[edit]

民国时此地分属通驷、三坑、元迳三保。1949年解放初归附城区西南村，1952年改为西南乡，1955年先建初级社，次年改设西南高级社；1957年冬撤区并乡，此地归城郊乡。[2]

1958年公社化后分设三坑、深陂两个大队，1964年两大队并为一个，仍称城郊公社西南大队，1968年起成为革委会的革领组，1980年由管委会管理。1984年起为城郊乡下属村，1986年改属临城乡，1993年称临城镇西南村民委员会。[2]
