下蔡村在霞美镇南部，北面紧邻后辽村，东边濒临浮头湾，西边是前梧村，南边为下蔡林场。通往下蔡林场的公路穿过本村[1]。
名称与沿革[edit]
古时村里有上蔡、中蔡、南蔡三社。后来上蔡与南蔡败落，中蔡和部分居民聚在一起，为与旧日三社区分，改称下蔡。清代至民国年间，这里由设于前梧村的机构管理。新中国初期至1961年7月隶属北江乡。1961年7月设下蔡大队，归霞美公社。1984年改为下蔡村委会，此后沿用。[1]
经济[edit]
耕地以番薯、花生、水稻为主，沿海沙滩上营造了防护林带。村中有台资经营的水产育苗及养殖企业，养殖鲍鱼等。[1]
