沙塘社区属晋江市新塘街道，位于晋江机场一带，原名沙堤，南宋时因倡修陂塘而改称沙塘。2003年11月由罗山镇划入新塘街道，改设社区居委会。[1][2]

地名由来[edit]

此地原称沙堤，地近海滨，积沙成堤，由此得名。南宋绍兴年间，状元梁克家在这一带倡修陂塘，遂又称沙塘。[1]

历史沿革[edit]

沙塘自唐开元六年（718年）已列入晋江县版籍，宋代属安仁乡聚仁里，元明清归二十六都。[2]

1934年设沙堤保，1941年与1944年先后隶属罗裳乡、大同乡；新中国成立后归梧林区，1955年改属罗山乡，1958年成为罗山公社沙塘大队。1992年晋江撤县改市后，沙塘仍归罗山镇，称沙塘村委会。2003年11月27日起，沙塘脱离罗山镇，划入新塘街道，改设社区居委会。[1][2]

地理环境[edit]

社区面积约四平方千米，地势南高北低，多为平原。西北侧紫帽山一脉南延入境，东面的碧山系罗裳山余脉，据称元末王姓先祖入晋后寓居碧山，其后族人在此繁衍。1954年建设晋江机场时，山体被移平，池塘被填。[1][2]

名胜古迹[edit]

锡福堂位于社区内，现存建筑为明代所建，门额上的「锡福」二字，传为明代张瑞图所书，今为后人摹刻。该堂初奉祀忠佑侯等神像，明中后期成为沙塘地区里社的「约所」，负责处理宗族纠纷、宣讲乡约并应对防涝救灾。清道光四年（1824年）与光绪二十四年（1898年）两次重修，此后废止。百度百科称其为泉州市文物保护单位，博雅地名网作市级。[1][3]
