村名来自南渡口。该渡口在西江南岸，与德庆隔江相对，旧时往来德庆的人多由此渡江。[1]
2021年12月，广东省爱卫会授予南渡村「2021年广东省卫生村」荣誉称号。[1]

虾捞山一带的宋代龙窑属南江口陶瓷窑群。[2]
