此处原为船只停泊、装卸货物的埠头，因货运形成圩集，称船埠头；“埔”与“埠”音同，遂写作船埔。[1]

片区居民以工商为主，人口3080人。[1]

2019年9月，该社区列入2018年广东省「民主法治示范村（社区）」创建单位名单。[1]
