大潭村位于靖海镇西南部，距镇区约5公里。村前有一条大河，河中有深潭，村名由此而来。[1]

地名与历史[edit]

村前有大河流过，河中有深潭，因而称大潭。[1]

清顺治初年（约1644年），福建林姓一支来此定居。1949年后此地称大潭村，之后陆续设为乡、大队、管理区办事处等，1999年才成立村委会。[1]

1975年，驻靖海公社的工作团动员全社整修村前河道，此后这条河被称为大潭河。[1]

地理与经济[edit]

村子南面是沙丘，一直延伸到南海，庵泉公路穿村而过。村中有林地，滩涂资源丰富，经济以农渔业为主，畜牧业为辅。[1]

村内有小型水库2个，用来灌溉农田。村民多懂得在浅滩潜水捕捞海胆等渔产。[1]
