历史沿革[edit]
明代设立惠来县，县治设在此地，县城于设县次年三月动工，两年后竣工，因县治所在取名“惠城”。百度百科记设县为明嘉靖三年（1524年），博雅地名网记为嘉靖四年（1525年），两说并存。[1][2]
1949年8月，惠来县人民政府设于惠城，县城部分称惠城区。1952年，原惠城区分为第一区和惠城镇；1958年12月惠来县建制撤销，红旗公社改属普宁县；1961年3月复县，设惠城公社，1983年改为惠城区；1986年11月惠城区改为镇。[4]
2002年6月，镇区原有的14个村改设为14个社区；2004年2月撤销河林乡政府，所辖12个村划归惠城镇。[1][4]
地理环境[edit]
镇域北部多山，中部为丘陵。北面与普宁市为邻，东北一侧与汕头市潮南区相接，两地界线多沿分水岭走向；东面是华湖镇，南面是东陇镇与隆江镇，西部大部分与石榴潭水库相连。[1][3]
镇境属亚热带季风气候。面积一说为173平方千米（百度百科），博雅地名网则作78平方公里，两说并存。1987年城区面积为4.3平方公里。[1][3]
同一年统计中，全镇山地9.66万亩，水田8277亩，并有山塘、水库6座，总库容4810万立方米。当年另有8处小型水电站，合计装机641千瓦。[3]
人口与经济[edit]
1987年，全镇总人口约7.05万，非农业居民为3.78万。[3]户籍人口在2019年末为183813人[1]，第七次全国人口普查结果为15.29万人。[2]
当年工农业总产值约2788.99万元，工业产值为1986万元，所占比重71.2%。耕地1.27万亩，水果种植2.16万亩，荔枝占其中1178亩。镇办工业有服装、机绣、塑料玩具和工艺宝石加工等12家。[3]
2019年，镇内有工业企业232个，其中规模以上27个；营业面积超过50平方米的综合商店或超市有138个。[1]惠城镇先后于2020年、2021年和2022年入选淘宝镇名单。[2]
名胜古迹[edit]
赤松观龙藏洞在镇西北约8公里处，为道教场所，洞周山清水秀，干旱时仍有泉水。1994年11月，当地道友凑集三百多万元资金重修古庙，庙名定为龙藏洞赤松观黄大仙庙，其开放获宗教主管部门核准。1997年4月起兴建乙镜真人宫。[5][6]
榕石庵位于镇北郊的榕山，古称榕石庵，明万历八年（1580年）创建。1990年与镇内东栅的永福寺合并，定名榕石永福禅寺。1987年，该庵被县里定为重点保护的文物。[7]
普陀岩位于镇北鸡心屿西北，距县城约10公里，始建可追溯到唐代，1989年至1998年重建。1933年3月，苏区银行曾在岩内自行印发货币。博雅地名网也将其列于镇境内。[8][3]
中共潮普惠县委旧址（朝住祠）位于上林樟村。朝住祠建于民国初期，坐北向南，三间三进，建筑面积约230平方米。1928年，彭湃曾在此办公并召开会议；1930年11月决定合并潮、普、惠三县并成立中共潮普惠县委，县委机关不久驻进朝住祠。1985年2月，该祠被公布为惠来县重点文物保护单位。[9]
著名人物[edit]
清代方应祷（1617～1702）为南美村人，1657年中举；明代方鲁（1516～1586）出身惠来都洋美里，即今洋美村一带，1565年为岁贡，后任广西灵川县丞；清代翁有仪（?～1828）为英内村人，1792年中举；方茂治（1825～1891）为梅北高埕人，擅长儿科，著有《童病集》。[2]
