历史沿革[edit]
社区的开村传说与镇志略有不同。社区网页称，王氏始祖王泰原居福建莆田，宦游广东后先在增城落户，之后看中此处土地肥沃、水景优美，才迁来定居立村。立村初名「后街」，因位于军铺之后，后来才改称「厚街」。博雅地名网与政府网站的镇级概况则只说王泰宦游至此定居，未提增城一段。[1][3][4]
交通与基础设施[edit]
S256省道、环莞快线、广深高速以及R2线轻轨横穿社区，距东莞市区约二十分钟车程，距虎门港约10公里。[1]
社区里有前进小学和厚街幼儿园，另有大明塘市场、大塘公园与图书馆，老人活动中心、社区舞台和篮球场一应俱全。[1]
经济[edit]
社区及各分社两级的集体厂房合计引入企业超过40家，多为劳动密集型，主要涉及机电、印刷、制衣与制鞋。社区表示今后重点发展机电和食品两个行业，并拟对「军铺工业区」「金街厂片区」「家宜商场群烨厂片区」等老旧工业区统筹开发、重建厂房。[1]
文化与名胜[edit]
鳌台书院的创办年代为明成化十二年（1476年），发起人是王恪，它是东莞较早的乡办书院之一。该院在1958年前曾作中心小学校舍，1990年被定为东莞市文物保护点。[2]
2008年重建时，资金由镇级财政承担，扩建后面积逾四千平方米，工程于2012年11月才竣工投入使用。[1][2]
社区内有古树49棵，其中一棵细叶榕树龄约250年。[1]
