垦殖与村落[edit]
清道光、咸丰年间，清政府在沿海修筑炮台、屯田养军，士兵屯垦，官府招佃，基围村落便由此逐渐形成。民国时期，沙区民居归南北面乡管辖。村民流动性大，多为佃户，有佃则居，无佃则散，居舍多为茅寮、竹棚，以渔农并举。[3]
水利[edit]
此地沙田肥沃，但缺淡水，种植单一，人畜饮水要从山边挑运。1966年，南北面的引淡与反洪涵闸建成，咸田开始用淡水灌溉，粮食产量逐年增加，一度成为虎门的高产甘蔗区。村民也组织渔业队出海，捕捞鱼虾贝类。[3]
