历史沿革[edit]
建国前，这里属基宁乡，隶东莞县第六区。1954年改隶第十一区（沙田区）；1957年撤区并乡，转到沙头大乡。1958年，它归入虎门人民公社，成为基宁生产大队。[2]
1960年，基宁生产大队分出一支另立，改称路东生产大队，直接归虎门人民公社。1983年设路东乡，归虎门区。1987年改为路东管理区，隶虎门镇。1999年设路东村委会，依旧归镇管。2005年村改居，成立路东社区居委会。[2]
宁洲与基围[edit]
路东以「宁洲」为主村，连同新围、旧围、洲头、园洲、蚝坦等基围组成管理区。民国时属南宁乡；土改时，濒海的村落分出来另成一个基宁乡。1958年10月并入虎门人民公社，当时的乡以沙太公路东西分界管理，「路东」之名由此而来。[3]
鸦片战争前此处为海滩，涨潮时水域辽阔，故与对岸的宴岗并称「对面海」。清道咸时期，沿海口修基筑围，招佃开垦。今蚝坦一带是旧日的蚝场。[3]
