历史沿革[edit]
1949年成立怀德乡，隶属第六区，同时分出东南几个自然村另立树田乡；1953年划属第九区；1957年撤区并乡，怀德划入北栅乡。[1]
1958年修建横岗水库时，厚街来的部分移民在怀德安家，并另立新沙埔村。当年，这里被纳入人民公社体制，村子改称怀德大队，归虎门人民公社领导。[1]
到1983年，大队撤销，重新设立怀德乡；1987年转为怀德管理区，归虎门镇管辖。1999年，管理区改为村，称怀德村委会，由虎门镇直接领导。[1]
村落与宗族[edit]
怀德为邓姓聚居，据族谱，南北宋之间立村，始祖元和原居香港新界桂角山一带，后迁入此地。村落分散，以芦山（今称龙头山）脚下为大村，周边分出十多个自然村。[2]
大坑村内有宋代所立的靖康医灵古庙，是当时靖康盐场内民间集议的地方，庙内尚存清乾隆末年重修时的石刻碑记。[2]
