厦边社区位于长安镇西南部，西邻虎门镇，由三个股份经济合作社合并而成，分别是厦边、沙边与坳头，总面积约4.7平方千米。[1]

社区以「龙马文化」为文化品牌，建有荔新公园、龙马文化公园等公园。[1]

据博雅地名网，宋朝时期，福建南雄人始居此地，于是取了今名。[2]

据东莞市人民政府门户网站，本地常住人口超过三千，外来人口大约六万。2020年，社区两级集体经济的资产总额为8.16亿元，收入总额1.30亿元，纯收入1.02亿元。[1]
