堂砥原属塘石生产大队，1961年分出成立生产大队，1983年改为乡，1987年起设村民委员会，1989年一度叫管理区，1999年恢复村民委员会之称，此后未再变动。[1]

主要经济作物是荔枝、香蕉；特色收入来自白色果蔗、红蔗；上一年（该网未注明年份）村经济总收入为1500万元。[1]
