中华街道是广东省湛江市赤坎区下辖的街道，位于赤坎区西北部，因辖区内有中华路而得名，下辖南方、新江、前进、中华4个社区。[1][2]

历史沿革[edit]

清末法国租借广州湾期间，这一带属赤坎公局辖地；国民政府收回广州湾后，辖区内曾驻有湛江市政警总队和先遣军第2支队。[1]

据百度百科的赤坎区条目，1950年赤坎区人民政府成立时设中山、海萍、民主、寸金、鸡岭等街道；1954年11月，中山、鸡岭两个街道办事处合并为中华街道办事处。[3]另有一说称1957年改称中华街道。[1]1960年6月赤坎人民公社成立，中华街道改为街道管理区；1978年2月，管理区改为街道办事处。[3]1968年曾建立革命委员会，1980年随赤坎区机构变动，复称中华街道办事处。[1]

地理环境[edit]

街道位于赤坎西北部：东面以光复路和中山二路为界，邻中山街道；南面是赤坎水库和南桥河北岸，对岸为南桥街道；西面沿南方路，邻麻章区的云头村；北面到九二一路，与寸金桥公园连着。[2]

赤坎水库建于1957年，在南溪河（今南桥河）上筑坝拦水而成，总库容575万立方米，曾是市区生活用水的备用水源。[6]

人口民族[edit]

中华街道在2000年人口普查时有33127人。[3]2021年6月第七次全国人口普查，街道人口约2.9万人，在赤坎区8个街道中居第7位。[1]面积各来源不一：土流网写作2.6平方千米，博雅地名网写作约5.5平方千米，后者的概况文字实为中山街道的介绍，不予采用。[1][2]

名胜古迹[edit]

土流网的介绍里，街道内的景点有森园、宁园，以及大中酒店和宝石大酒店的旧址。[2]

森园在九二一路与中华路交汇处，门牌为中华路44号之一，是带院落的三层别墅式建筑，被列为湛江市名址；它所在的一带曾是官邸酒店聚集之地，近年正被改造成民宿和青年驿站，属赤坎古商埠街区的保育活化工程。[4]

宝石大酒店建于20世纪20年代末，出资人是富商许爱周，楼高两层、六间相连，属骑楼式样；广州湾时期坊间称「食在大中，住在宝石」。酒店原址在中山二路，现存为旧址。[5]
