外塘村位于甘棠镇东部，濒临赛江，村前隔江相望的是乌山岛，村子有海岸线约2.5公里，村民世代靠海营生。[1]
地名由来[edit]
村子建在塘堤边，故名。[2]
历史沿革[edit]
外塘古称塘江，据称最早的建置可追溯到宋雍熙二年（985年）。明清时期它隶属二十九都。民国时期先设外塘乡，后归三塘乡与三塘镇，其中1945年时为三塘镇下的外塘保。新中国成立后，1950年归甘棠区外塘乡，1956年并入甘棠镇，1958年为大队，1984年改设村民委员会。[3]

名胜古迹[edit]
村前海岸边有一组渡头岸，据博雅地名网所载，其中仓库码头仍保存较好，始建于明代，清代又有修建，是甘棠镇的外塘渡船岸码头，为福安市文物保护单位。[5] 2013年，福安市人民政府将其列为第五批市级文物保护单位。[5]
荣誉[edit]
村子曾获「省级人民调解先进集体」（2013年）、「市级先进基层党组织」（2011年）和「市级文明村」（2015至2017年）等称号。[1] 本村于2024年1月获评「2023年福建省卫生村」。[1]
