南塘澳村位于盐田乡正南面，距乡政府约10千米，陆有盐南路，水有直通外海的南塘港。[1]

村建于南塘的一处澳口上，故名。村民多为连家船民上岸定居而来，集居于一个自然村。据博雅地名网，村有428户、1526人，未注统计时间。[1]

村民多信仰基督教，建有霞浦县规模最大的基督教堂，占地约4.6亩，可容纳信徒三千多人。[1]

2021年11月，南塘澳村被命名为「2021年福建省卫生村」。[1]
