牙城镇在霞浦县东北部，东面临海，隔海与福鼎市遥望，镇人民政府设在牙城村。全镇目前设1个社区和25个行政村，是县内较靠东北的一个镇。[1][5][6]
镇域面积的记载不一：百度百科与维基百科作115.96平方千米，博雅地名网作108.9平方千米。户籍人口在2019年末为33723人。2020年第七次全国人口普查（以2020年11月1日零时为普查时点）时，牙城镇的常住人口处于2万至10万人之间，较2010年有所增加。[2][3][5][7]
历史沿革[edit]
唐宋时期此地隶属劝儒乡的擢秀里。此后直到清末，境内分属福宁州下的几个都，其中一部分后来归入上东（西洋）区。[4]
民国时期，1936年改隶第二区，1940年建立凤城镇，三年后该镇并入三沙镇；1945年又由原凤城镇与武平乡的大部分地区组成凤平乡。1949年底归入第四区，1956年2月易名为牙城区。[4]
1958年取消牙城区建制，改设牙城人民公社；1961年5月重新恢复为区，1966年10月又改为公社，1984年改称镇。[4]
据博雅地名网，镇名源于明朝修建城堡之时：周边山脊横列，其中有三处突起状似齿牙，于是称作「牙城」，另有别称「凤城」。[2]
2014年7月，牙城镇列入「全国重点镇」名单；2020年7月，全国爱卫会授予牙城镇「2017-2019周期国家卫生乡镇（县城）」称号。[2]
地理与人口[edit]
牙城镇东濒东海，海岸线全长35公里，沿海滩涂约1.08万亩，其中滩涂8700亩、浅海2000亩。镇域西侧与水门畲族乡接壤，南面与三沙镇连在一起。[3]
博雅地名网记载，全镇下辖26个村（居），其中11个村（居）临海，15个村位于山区，合计195个自然村。[2]

名胜古迹[edit]
文洋城堡在文洋村文洋里自然村，据百度百科建于明嘉靖三十四年（1555年）。城堡依山修筑，墙体周长约720米，占地约5409平方米，是福建省第十一批省级文物保护单位。[8]
杨家溪景区位于牙城镇境内。博雅地名网的《牙城镇概况》称，杨家溪属太姥山风景名胜区中的「川」景，以溪瀑为主要景观，该风景区于1998年经国务院公布。[3]
交通与经济[edit]
镇人民政府距霞浦县城24千米。省道沙吕线、福宁高速公路与福温铁路都经过牙城集镇，其中高速公路在境内设有互通口和服务区，铁路设有会让站。[3][5]
2019年末统计，全镇有工业企业155个，其中规模以上的31个；营业面积超过50平方米的综合商店或超市有13个。[5]
