历史沿革[edit]
镇名的由来，据博雅地名网所载：古时此地称雁乐，相传为古代群雁栖息之地，后谐音演为安乐；境内七条溪涧在安乐洋汇合，经溪虎岔口注入霍童溪，故有「七溪」之别称。因七溪水源不足、河道浅短，遇涝易成山洪之灾，遇旱则溪水断流、溪石焦红，于是改称赤溪。[1]
1949年5月设立临时乡人民政府。1950年民主建政后，原赤溪乡下辖的九个保改为乡建制，归霍童第三区管辖。1958年8月，境内九个乡并为赤溪人民公社；1961年8月改设赤溪区，1966年7月撤区并社，复称人民公社。1984年10月，赤溪人民公社改制为乡，原先的大队相应改为行政村；1992年1月，随宁德县改市，赤溪由乡改为镇。[2]
地理环境[edit]
雁乐溪在镇境西南，黄田、东边、夏村、阳谷等村沿溪两侧分布。[3][4][5]
镇区所在的赤溪村位于南屏峰北侧，牛洞村位于牛垄山西北侧。[6][7]
人口民族[edit]
据博雅地名网，全镇人口约1.46万人。镇内有两个少数民族行政村：松柴岭村于1999年确立，班竹村于2004年12月确立。[1][8][9]
经济[edit]
当地农业以稻谷、薯类和小麦为大宗，茶叶、香菇、蘑菇也有出产。[1]
近年镇域所获荣誉：2025年11月，被认定为「福建省第二批省级乡村振兴示范乡镇」；2024年6月，「福建省第四批高级版绿盈乡镇」名单公布，赤溪镇上榜；2021年4月，获评「2020年度福建省乡村振兴重点特色乡（镇）」；2020年7月，全国爱卫会命名为「2017-2019周期国家卫生乡镇（县城）」；2019年12月，被认定为「全国乡村治理示范乡镇」；2016年12月，入选「第四批美丽宜居小镇示范」名单；2014年9月，环境保护部授予「2012年—2013年度国家级生态乡镇」称号。[1]

「第五批福建省历史文化名镇名村」一项，由福建省人民政府于2016年5月确认，赤溪镇位列其中。[1]
