严婆田村位于南山集镇北郊，南邻南山村，北与大田村接壤，村落处在汀江支流南山河北溪下游的纵深平谷中。[1]

据传明末清初，林氏祖先的涂杨氏老太太治家严正，村名遂由“尧和田”改为严婆田。[1]

建国后归南山乡，合作化时组成初级社。1958年为南山公社下的严婆田大队，其间曾改称东风大队，1972年恢复原名，1984年起为村委会。[1]

2020年2月，严婆田村列入「福建省第三批省级传统村落」名单；2022年8月，被认定为「龙岩市2022年市级一村一品专业村」（槟榔芋）；2022年10月，被认定为「第二批福建省乡村治理示范村镇」；2022年12月，被确定为「2022年度福建省一村一品专业村」（槟榔芋）。[1]
