新街村位于湖坑镇的集镇中心，城乡分类属镇中心区。村名来自清末以后的集市：清末始建湖坑墟，1953年重建街道市场，故称新街。[1]

2009年被评为县级文明村，2021年11月起获得福建省卫生村的称号。[1]

历史沿革[edit]

1949年前，这里属湖公保。1953年曾设湖公乡，1954年并入湖坑乡。[3]

1960年冬，村里分出一个大队，名为田星大队；1964年3月又并回原来的大队。1979年再分出时，因大部队驻扎在新街，遂改名新街大队，1984年8月改设新街村民委员会。[3]

1985年又建起农贸市场，据博雅地名网，该市场曾是周边平和、永定与广东一带的贸易中心。[3]

文化[edit]

村里的宫背自然村有马额宫，据博雅地名网称已有五百多年历史，宫前有百年古柏。[1][2]

新街村是「湖坑大福」民俗活动的重要传承村，狮舞、客家传统歌舞、小品「媒婆嫁女」和山歌等都在这里传承。[1][2]

著名人物[edit]

李天生，当代曲艺名人，人称「闽西山歌大王」，其山歌曾在国内外多地演唱。据博雅地名网载，他的名字被载入《世界名人录》。[1]

村内金石山上有太清宫，兴建于上世纪九十年代末。[1]
