姓氏与族谱[edit]
上蔡社以蔡姓为主，有祠堂。据《金浦蔡氏族谱》，上蔡蔡姓出自蔡元鼎之后：唐代蔡长眉随陈政入闽，居云霄之西；其后裔蔡元鼎隐居漳浦北境，传裔至蔡坑；宋末德祐年间，蔡元仲自潮州回居东埔，东埔的蔡姓再分传石埕，上蔡即自石埕分出。[2]
下蔡社同为蔡姓，由上蔡分传而来。赤文头社以许姓为主，由深土镇示埔社分来，另有部分林姓，由乌石分传。[2]
历史沿革[edit]
民国时期村属海乌乡上蔡保。新中国初期属第八区，1956年10月改属旧镇区。1958年9月设高明大队，1960年5月改为上蔡大队，1984年9月改为上蔡村。1987年3月，从上蔡村分出寨内、山仔两村。[2]
名胜古迹[edit]
上蔡大庙始建于元代，明清时重修，祀观音与玄天上帝，庙中有元代刻字石柱多件。蔡氏家庙建于明清间，存有牌匾6个、旗杆4件。社中心有棵万年刺桐。[2]
古代人物[edit]
蔡昂为明万历十七年进士，官尚宝少卿；蔡升为明万历八年进士，官淮安府推官。[2]
