此地原属龙坑大队，后拆分为两村，为便于分辨，按地理位置命名为外龙。[1]
南宋末年，此地与今内龙村合称龙兴；1958年大跃进开始之前，此地名龙坑，其后分设为外龙、内龙两村。[1]
