沙堤村位于永宁镇东端，濒临大海，村名来自海边沙丘积成的一道白色天然堤岸。[1][2]

村旁旧时枫树成林，故又称枫边，闽南语中与桑边同音，俗称桑边或霜边。[2]

地名由来[edit]

沿海一带沙丘连绵，长期受潮水冲击与风沙吹扬，年久积成一道白色天然长堤，村因此得名。[3]

地理环境[edit]

村东海边有一座观音山，三面环海。站在山上远望村前长堤，宛如巨鲸卧在水中，因此又称「鲸江」。[2]

历史沿革[edit]

北宋时已有蔡、李、黄、许等姓在此聚居。南宋嘉定年间龚氏迁入，元初董氏迁入，两姓分居两处角落开发，以农、渔和海上运输为业，至今繁衍已800多年。[2]

元明时期村中渔业兴盛，名宦龚名安等人曾在此居住，文人留下不少诗作。[2]

明末，沙堤人董友，民间称董酋姑，是郑成功的贤内助，既育子女，又辅佐大政。[4]

1956年设沙堤高级社，实行渔农分开；1965年改称沙堤大队，1984年改为沙堤村民委员会。[1]
