港边村在永宁镇南侧，北与永宁镇区相邻，村落建在梅林港的湾澳边，因而得名。[1][2]

村前原有港道直达永宁卫城南门，涨潮时水面如海、退潮时如江，村名又有「鳌江」之称。[2]

地名由来[edit]

村子建在梅林港边的一处湾澳上，故名“港边”。[3]

地理环境[edit]

古时港道可直达永宁卫城的南门，涨潮时像海，退潮时像江，因此又称「鳌江」。[2]

历史沿革[edit]

宋元时期村中主要姓氏为姜、苏、林、何、蔡。明代倭寇扰乱沿海，诸姓多迁往泉州城区、石狮与大埔等地。明末清初，佘、李、陈三姓先后定居此地，从事航运与经商。[2]

1956年设港边高级社，1958年改设港边大队，1984年改称港边村委会。[1]

1940年7月，日军登陆永宁，港口的商船、渔船以及新、旧街仔的栈房和商店多被焚毁。[2]

人口民族[edit]

现村中主要姓氏为李、佘、陈、张，以及蔡、黄等，共14个姓氏。[2]

著名人物[edit]

港边人李爱珍从事半导体材料研究，在美国科学院当选外籍院士，据石狮市人民政府网站称，她是中国化合物半导体领域的首代女科学家。[4]
