社区名称来自当地土质呈赤色的红壤土[1]。
社区前身是玉霞大队，之后成为村。2006年，村的建制改为居委会，名为玉霞社区居委会[2]。

社区地势平坦，南高渠从社区南面穿过，南侧靠紫帽山[3]。
