村名先后称作元镇、元坪，后改为元埕。[1]

村落始建于唐代，明清时期属黄潭都图三。[1]

2024年7月，元埕村被命名为「2023年度三明市达标“六无”村（社区）」，同月又被确定为「2021-2023年三明市达标“六无”村（社区）」。[1]
