八字桥乡位于福建省三明市尤溪县西部，东与管前镇相接，西南与大田县广平镇为邻，西北一侧同沙县的大洛镇、南霞乡接壤。乡域面积，百度百科载为78.85平方千米，博雅地名网则作约60平方千米，两说并存。[1][3]

乡名的来历与地形有关：坑头溪与村头溪在此汇合，两条溪口各架一座桥，桥身连成的形状像「八」字，乡因此得名。[1][2]

历史沿革[edit]

宋太平兴国四年（979年），此地属常平乡进溪里。明清两代，这里分处尤溪一都和二都的范围之内。民国时期归管前管辖，解放初虽设过区乡，仍隶属管前。[1]

1979年11月，八字桥人民公社从管前公社中划出；1984年9月，公社改为乡。[1][3]

革命历史[edit]

1933年10月，龙湖村内成立了尤溪县第一个党支部，即中共龙湖支部，党员7人。红军东方军攻打尤溪期间，这些党员随部队转往县内其他乡镇开展工作。[2]

1945年5月，闽西北挺进支队在龙湖村休整，其间与国民党军队在石头坑一带交战，有4名战士牺牲。[2]
