村名因地形而来：村口两侧山岭相接，如同围墙，马氏两支居于其中，故称马家围。2021年11月，村庄被福建省爱卫办命名为2021年福建省卫生村；2022年10月，被认定为第二批福建省乡村治理示范村镇。[1][2]
