村名原为“蕉溪”“蕉锋”，脱离陈大公社后，村民议定改称「小蕉」。[1]
20世纪70年代前，小蕉属陈大公社。1972年设三钢小蕉生产队，1984年划归三明市畜牧厂；80年代末改属园艺厂，2006年才设立小蕉村民委员会。[1]
村中有一处木构宅院，院子的总面积为2000平方米，现作陶艺工作室；该宅院又是景德镇陶瓷大学古陶瓷研究所「南宋官窑研究生实训基地」的一处。[2]
近年来，小蕉村先后获得「国家森林乡村」「省森林村庄」「省乡村振兴试点村」「省新农村社区样板村」「海峡两岸乡村融合发展示范村」等称号。[2]
2021年10月，小蕉村入选「2021年福建省“金牌旅游村”」名单。2022年10月，小蕉村被福建省农业农村厅认定为「第二批福建省乡村治理示范村镇」。2023年2月，小蕉村入选「第三批高级版绿盈乡村」。[1]
2024年1月，小蕉村被命名为「2023年福建省卫生村」。2025年3月，小蕉村被命名为「第七届全国文明村镇」，并被认定为「福建省第一批省级乡村振兴示范村」。[1]
