翁墩社区的名称来源：相传古时有翁姓人家到此创业，把房屋建在土墩上，地因此得名。[1]

1980年7月设翁墩居委会，目的是便于城市的建设与管理。2002年，翁墩社区居民委员会才正式设立。[1]

2021年2月，翁墩社区列入「2018—2020年度省级文明村镇社区」名单；同年4月，被命名为「2021年三明市民主法治示范村（社区）」。[1]

福建省爱国卫生运动委员会于2022年12月授予翁墩社区「2022年福建省卫生社区」称号。2024年7月，又被命名为「2023年度三明市达标“六无”村（社区）」。[1]
