西苑乡是福建省莆田市仙游县下辖的乡，位于县境西北部山区，东与社硎、菜溪、石苍等乡接壤，西与德化县毗邻，北与永泰县相接，乡政府驻西苑村。[1][3]

全乡辖16个行政村。乡境内有莆田市最高峰石谷解，木兰溪也发源于此，这条河被称为莆田人民的母亲河。[2][5]

历史沿革[edit]

乡的沿革大致是这样：1958年9月组成西苑公社，之后在1984年11月改设为乡。2002年10月，凤山乡撤并入本乡，乡辖村数由此定为16个，至2021年10月仍是这一数字。[1]

中华人民共和国成立后，这一带先后归仙游县的七区（度尾）与十五区（西苑）管辖。[1]

地理环境[edit]

乡境属南亚热带山地季风气候。境内石谷解的主峰高1803.3米，是莆田境内海拔最高的山，人称“闽中第一高峰”。[2][4]

木兰溪干流全长105公里，发源于乡境西北部的仙西村一带，向东流经仙游县与莆田市区，至涵江区三江口注入兴化湾。[5]

名胜古迹[edit]

无尘塔在凤顶村境内，位于九座寺西边大约400米处，建于唐代咸通六年，即公元865年。它是三层八角形的空心石塔，通高与内径分别为14.22米和6.45米。这座塔在2006年5月25日进入第六批全国重点文物保护单位名录。[6]

九座寺原名太平禅院，位于凤顶村九座山东麓，由智广禅师于唐代咸通六年倡建。咸通十年（869年），唐懿宗题额为“九座山太平禅院”。寺院在宋代曾两次被焚，明代又遭大火，此后多次重建。现为仙游县文物保护单位。[7]

十八股头也叫皇冠山，位于凤顶村境内。其主峰高出海面1520米，占地约6.5平方千米，属木兰溪源省级自然保护区，以奇特的巨石群为景观主体。[8]
