历史沿革[edit]
明代，一支姓邓的家族从永春县湖洋石厝迁入此地定居。[1]
解放前，村属鲤湖乡管辖。之后它历经六区、九区、十四区的隶属变化，1956年划入麦斜区；1958年改属钟山公社，1962年单设临水大队。村民委员会于1984年建立。[1]
名胜古迹[edit]
中共福建省委湖底驻地旧址位于村内。在村内上湖底一带，中共福建省委（临水中共闽南特委）于1946年8至10月间开展活动，留有旧址，属革命旧址。[1]
荣誉[edit]
莆田市第十五届市级文明村镇（社区）的称号，2021年3月授予临水村；同年11月，它又被福建省爱卫办命名为「2021年福建省卫生村」。[1]
2022年10月，临水村被认定为「2022年度莆田市中级版绿盈乡村」，并被福建省农业农村厅认定为第二批福建省乡村治理示范村镇。[1]
