历史沿革[edit]
明洪武二十年（1387年），朝廷为防御倭寇在此设平海卫，并营建平海卫城，平海由此成为沿海的军事要地。卫学培养出举人64人、进士13人（博雅地名网，未注年代）。该网站还列出周德兴、戚继光、施琅、郑成功等人与平海的关联。[3][2]
民国时期，平海先后设平海区（1913年）、平海乡（1943年），1933年属莆田县第七区。1961年改为平海人民公社，1965年撤区并社后仍沿用此名；1984年改设平海乡，1993年改为镇（百度百科作1994年）。2002年2月，平海由莆田县划归秀屿区管辖。[3][4]
2019年1月，秀屿区政府批复设立平海社区居民委员会，原平海村委会的辖地随之改为社区。[9]
地理环境[edit]
镇境地势东西两侧高、中部低，由丘陵、台地和平原组成，最高峰为鹭峰山，海拔311米。东南两面临海，海岸线长21.75千米。镇政府所在地距莆田市区43公里，距秀屿区政府26公里。平海港可停靠万吨级船舶，镇境的海上风力资源也较丰富，年均5级以上风力约320天。[2][4][1]
经济[edit]
水产养殖是镇里的主要产业。平海湾的浅海与滩涂用于海带、双壳贝类等养殖，并向育苗、加工与营销等环节延伸。2023年全镇有双壳贝类育苗场18家。同年12月，平海一级渔港被农业农村部评为「全国文明渔港」。镇境内建筑用石材的储量据称约1亿立方，另有上林村出产的锈石，曾是天安门广场修葺的首选材料。[1][2]
社会治理[edit]
2023年，平海建立了海上枫桥调解中心，并在渔港推行「红港亮灯」等做法，以村级四轮调解和镇级复核化解矛盾纠纷。[1]
名胜古迹[edit]
平海天后宫在原平海村东至自然村，今属平海社区，始建于北宋咸平二年（999年）。宫中用了108根木柱，因此又称「百柱宫」，俗称「娘妈宫」。它是宋代殿宇式妈祖行宫的原构遗存。1996年，福建省人民政府将其列入「第四批省级文物保护单位」；2013年3月，国务院将其列入「第七批全国重点文物保护单位」。[5][7]
平海卫城隍庙在原平海村西北，建于明洪武二十年（1387年），主持建造者为江夏侯周德兴。清康熙年间复界后予以重修，现存为二进廊院式建筑。2009年它被列入「第七批福建省省级文物保护单位」，2012年又被列为「首批涉台文物保护单位」。庙区内另有明嘉靖二年（1523年）所建的平海进士坊，纪念进士黄杭。[6][8]
文化[edit]
妈祖信仰是平海文化的一条主线。据博雅地名网，平海天后宫被称为世界第一座妈祖分灵庙，并引用资料说台湾有四百多座妈祖宫由它分灵而来。清康熙二十二年，施琅奏请朝廷重修平海天后宫、重塑妈祖神像，又撰写《师泉井记》，并题写「师泉」石碑立于井边，石碑至今保存。[7]
城隍庙的民俗活动包括正月十五的元宵灯会和正月初九的城隍巡游，巡游队伍途经平海天后宫等地。[6]
2023年，镇里开馆的有「平海卫城史迹馆」「平海卫城姓氏源流馆」「平海闽台妈祖文化交流中心」，另设镇游客服务中心。[1]
