霞西村的村名来自原名下屿，下屿意为海中岛屿。“霞”是“下”的谐音美化。1994年，原下屿村以下屿中学为界分为东西两个行政村，西侧即霞西村。[1]
历史沿革[edit]
下屿人口增长较快，1994年当地政府为便于管理，将原下屿村划为两个行政村。此后仍隶属莆田县东峤镇，2002年起改属秀屿区东峤镇。[1]
文化[edit]
2021年3月，霞西村被确定为「莆田市第十五届市级文明村镇（社区）」。[1]
2024年1月，霞西村获「2023年福建省卫生村」的命名。[1]
2025年6月，霞西村被认定为「2025年莆田市一村一品专业村」，主导产业是下屿蛏养殖。[1]
