莆头村位于礼泉半岛西部，属秀屿港港区，陆域面积3.28平方千米。村名的来历有一个传说：明代一位官员在湄洲湾南岸指着对岸的村庄，笑称那是莆田的头一村。[1]

地名由来[edit]

据传明朝时，一位官员路过惠安县沙洛村（位于湄洲湾南岸），指着湄洲湾北岸的村庄笑说：“那就是莆田的头一村了”，村因此得名莆头。[1]

历史沿革[edit]

1949年，莆头属五区（笏石区）莆前保与莆前乡。土地改革后改属二十区（下塘）莆前乡，1955年改隶忠门区，仍称莆前乡。1958年，四地合为莆林乡：大象、莆头、前云、东沁。此后1963年称莆前大队，1973年分出莆头大队。[1]

1984年，大队转为村，隶属莆田县东庄乡。1988年划入秀屿镇，2000年归东庄镇，2002年归秀屿区，2007年迁址重建村委会。[1]

经济[edit]

村民的主要收入来自医疗投资、海洋捕捞和水产养殖。[1]
