营边社区位于东庄镇，是镇政府的驻地。社区名称源自明代的一处营寨，社区位于营寨原址范围之内。[1]
历史沿革[edit]
1949年，营边一带属莆田县第五区（笏石）的江边保和江边乡。1958年划入忠门公社东营大队，1960年改属东庄公社营边大队。1963年营边曾与锦山村合称东营公社，1968年改称东营镇。[1]
1986年改为东庄镇营边居委会，1989年起称秀屿区东庄镇营边社区。[1]
地名由来[edit]
营边之名出自明嘉靖十三年（1534年）的一次防务。当时倭寇侵扰沿海，朝廷派陈家光带兵驻守此地，并修建营寨抵御。社区所在处即原营寨的范围，因而得名。[1]
名胜古迹[edit]
社区内的壶南祠为明清时期的木构建筑，建筑面积714平方米，由门厅、拜亭和正殿组成。该祠于2018年被福建省人民政府列为第九批省级文物保护单位。博雅地名网将壶南祠的位置记在营边村名下，营边村即今营边社区。[2]
荣誉[edit]
2020年12月，营边社区被确定为「福建省第一批高级版绿盈乡村」。2021年3月，社区入选「莆田市第十五届市级文明村镇（社区）」。2021年11月，福建省爱卫办命名营边社区为「2021年福建省卫生社区」。2025年5月，社区入选福建省美丽乡村示范村创建名单。[1]
