上院村隶属涵江区庄边镇。村名来自村子位于尼姑院上方的一片平地，村民在此聚居，形成村落。[1]

村子以种植业见长，先后被认定为「2023年莆田市一村一品专业村」（主导产业为茶叶）和「2025年莆田市一村一品专业村」（主导产业为羊肚菌）。2021年11月，村子被命名为「2021年福建省卫生村」。[1]

历史沿革[edit]

宋元时此地属兴化县，明代改隶莆田县广业里。民国时期这里是莆田县第四区游洋乡下的溪峰保。1950年为14区的溪峰乡，1952年划入13区的庄边镇。1956年设上院高级社，1958年成为上院人民公社的生产大队，1965年改为大队。1984年底更名上院村，仍属莆田县；1992年以后隶属庄边镇，2002年转入涵江区。[2]

名胜古迹[edit]

上院半溪联络站旧址位于半溪自然村。1947年前后，黄国璋、林汝楠、饶云山等人常在上院一带活动，并在半溪一户农家设立地下联络站，由当地人担任联络员，参与地下革命活动。[1]
