社区名取意于它位在涵江城区的西部。[1]

2021年3月，社区被确定为「莆田市第十五届市级文明村镇（社区）」；2024年1月，被命名为「2023年福建省卫生社区」。[1]

历史沿革[edit]

宋元时期这里属延寿里，明清时属莆田县第二区延寿里。新中国成立前，这里属龙楼保；此后归入港头乡，又经公社化时期的调整，改为涵西大队。1984年设涵西村委会，2002年才改称社区居委会。[2]

名胜古迹[edit]

新有社是一座单进合院式的古建筑，主祀社公，始建于南宋景炎元年（1276年），明正德十二年（1517年）由莆田知县雷应龙主持重修。社内保存着文天祥题写的「新有社」匾，以及雷应龙题写的「第一里社」匾与题联石柱。1993年，它升格为莆田市市级文物保护单位。[3][4]
